Here we go – Six more weeks of Winter!
Punxutawney Phil, the Prognosticator of prognosticators, came out of his cozy burrow yesterday and saw his own shadow. This was to be expected, as the “polar vortex” continues to grip much of the country in relentless fashion.
One thing is certain: it’s cold out there. So how can you keep yourself from going totally stir-crazy? Grab your hat and gloves and get out the house! Explore our fine, local fun for the whole family resources and activities!
Here are six ways to beat six more weeks of cabin fever:
1. Rent a pair of Skis!
There are a few great places in the Michiana area to rent a pair of skis. Berrien County has two great parks with groomed cross-country trails, or the downhill adventurous types can go faster at Swiss Valley in Jones, MI. Ski rentals are affordable and provide a good workout. Plus, there’s the bonus of hot chocolate by the fire!
2. Skate with your date!
Of course the whole family could join, but this could also be a great date night activity. The Compton Ice Arena at Notre Dame has skating for the whole family, as does the classic Howard Park Ice Rink near downtown South Bend. Both facilities are also located close to some of the best restaurants in the area!
3.Slide on your backside!
This is arguably the most fun you could have all Winter! Grab a tube, zip yourself down a monster hill and see how fast can you go. St. Pat’s County Park has a big ‘ole hill of fun, as does Five Pines near Berrien Springs.
4. Experience local art and history!
There are several great museums and viewing galleries in our area. Children can touch and explore the world at the Hannah Lindahl Children’s Museum in Mishawaka, as well as the Healthworks Kids Museum in downtown South Bend. Local history enthusiasts can relieve great moments from our past at the Studebaker National Museum and the Center for History, both of which are located on the same campus near downtown South Bend. Art lovers can enjoy the exhibits at the South Bend Museum of Art or the Snite Museum of Art at Notre Dame.
5. Go to a show!
The Morris Performing Arts Center located in downtown South Bend has a fantastic line-up for the 2014 season. The fully revamped Lerner Theatre in Elkhart also has great entertainment scheduled for this year.
6. Get ready to look good this summer!
The snow and ice will be gone before we know it. Now is the time to sweat away those extra Winter pounds and get fit for beach season. Plus, there are all kinds of benefits to exercise – better thinking, better sleep, bigger results. The Michiana Family YMCA and the O’Brien Fitness Center have all sorts of ways to have fun while building those muscles.
